ABOUT ME

I am a Senior Research Fellow in Public Health at the University of Auckland's School of Population Health. Over the past decade, my research has focused on understanding how screens impact the health behaviours and well-being of New Zealand children through experimental studies, surveys, interviews, and workshops with children, adolescents, and parents.

Integrating insights from developmental science and international research on screen use, I have developed evidence-based parenting programs to assist parents in navigating the complexities of screen use and its effects on children and teens. I've engaged extensively with parents and caregivers of preschoolers, children, and adolescents, studying teen perspectives on screen use and strategies to maximize benefits while mitigating negatives.

Recently, in collaboration with Julie Cullen from Sensible Screens, we published recommendations for safe technology use in New Zealand schools, kura, and early childhood education. These guidelines, developed in conjunction with local and international experts in digital media, are endorsed by the Paediatric Society of New Zealand, Brainwave Trust, the Pasifika Principals Association (NZPPA), the Office for Early Childhood Education, and the Sensible Screen Use Task Force.

My goal is to bridge the gap between screen-use research and its practical implications for parents, caregivers, teachers, and school principals. Reach out and let's talk about how I can support you.
